Honor: Open Letter to Kevin Young

This week I am doing a series of posts on HONOR.  I am writing open letters to those individuals who have greatly influenced me and my relationship with the Lord.  This comes from a recent message given by pastor Steven Furtick at Elevation Church during the Old Time Religion series. To sum it up, we don’t honor those who have influenced us enough.  We should do all we can to let those individuals know the impact they have had on us and the kingdom.  Here’s just a little part of that…

Kevin Young is the front man and lead singer for the Christian rock group Disciple.  I met Kevin 10 or so years ago in a Christian book store….
Kevin,
It seems like many years ago you and I crossed paths.  Somewhere around 10 to be exact.  I was browsing the new releases for the week and picked up a cd with some long haired dudes on the front and an album named My Daddy Can Whip Your Daddy.  Nice touch by the way.  I think that moment that you approached me and said, “don’t buy that, those guys stink” was truly an interesting moment in my life.  I did buy the album; and every one since then.  But the point of this isn’t reminist, it’s to say thank you.  Over the years of listening to your records, hearing you speak or the ocassional chance to hang out with you have had a bigger impact on my life than you may ever know.
You see, not only did your influence change the music I listen to, but your passion that you exhibit when on stage has carried over into my life when I take the stage to speak.  I’ve seen you  speak with a boldness that I haven’t seen in many preachers or pastors before, that definitely says “satan, you can go to hell.”  I would get so juiced after seeing a Disciple concert!  There has been many a Disciple song that played in my ear just before a basketball game or athletic event I was taking place in.  On some days, there’s still a Disciple song that gets played before I take a court, field or just when I work out.  It’s not so much the head banging music, shredding guitars, or thump of the bass…..it’s the passion.
If there’s one thing that I can say that you have instilled in me Kevin, it’s this; have passion for God.  Exhibit that passion on every stage, in every town, in every city, in every country and in every other opportunity in life.  Speak with passion, live with passion, live for Jesus.
Thank you Kevin
